The House of Arts and Culture has been conceived as an anchor and stimulus of a nation’s identity furthermore it is deeply rooted into its site history and surroundings. Beirut the city of seven layers has been thriving since Phoenician times and is still in the process of reinventing herself after decades of war and devastation that have erased a significant part of the urban fabric. The intent of the building design is for it to act as a canyon, cutting through the layers of time and history emphasizing on collective memories and to acknowledge future creativity but also looking forward to a new pioneering and dynamic vision of Beirut cities.

泉の街「Beroth」の語源を持つベイルートは、古より交易の場として盛え、ギリシャ、ローマ、アラブ、オスマントルコそしてフランスに代表される、数々の文明や人々が流入する場となった。同時に、長年の戦火に傷ついたこの街は、新しい文化の拠点としてそして起爆点として歴史と場所に根ざした文化施設の建設を期に再生を果たそうとしている。建物は中心部に人、風、光を取り込む有機的な形を持った峡谷を備えている。そこから見える建物の断面はかつての地層のように重なる異文化と歴史の記憶を思い起こさせる。またファサードに現れる建物内部の多様な文化活動は、未来の街の新しく先進的で力強い姿をその周囲に発信する役割を担っている。
